While building heights in the Netherlands are increasing, the population is ageing and people with (temporary) physical limitations expect to be able to fully participate in society. This rises the question whether total building evacuation via only stairs remains as safe as it is perceived to be. In my thesis research I was able to determine that lifts are both a viable and desirable option for emergency egress in the Netherlands.
