IEA implementing agreement for hybrid and electric vehicle technologies and programmes, Annex VII hybrid vehicles : Topic 13, assessment of the energy consumption of hybrid trucks using ADVISOR

report
This topic report focuses on the possible benefits of the application of a hybrid powertrain in heavy-duty vehicles. The main objective is to assess whether a significant reduction in fuel consumption is feasible. An average Dutch distribution truck with a conventional driveline will be compared to a truck with a series hybrid driveline and a truck with a parallel hybrid driveline. Both hybrids will only use diesel fuel as their source of energy: i.e. the batteries are only charged through the on-board generator, not by an external source. The dimensioning of the hybrid powertrains is done on the bases of comparable acceleration times and top speed. An auxiliary power demand of 8 kW is taken into account. Assessment of the energy consumption of the trucks is done through the use of the simulation tool ADVISOR (ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR), version 3.1, developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), USA.
