Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1982-03-31 Abstract The measurement of deformations remains an important discipline for the development and evaluation of structures. The report gives a survey of the most important measurement methods now available. Aspects of light which are vital for the understanding of optical methods are treated because these methods become more and more important. The described methods are based on: strain gages, stress gages, photoelastic coatings, grids, lasers, moire, moire interferometry, picture correlation, caustics, speckles and holographic interferometry. Attention is paid to physical principles, applicability, handling, instrumentation, accuracy, speed and costs. The author gives his view on future trends.
