Abstract

The Summer Introduction Programme 2015 welcomes about 1600 international students who follow an obligatory programme. Throughout a week of project work students design a water rocket and an academic poster, get familiarized with the Delft study method, and working in multicultural groups.

In our project team, Oldenzaal 3, we designed a water rocket based on the following design principles : Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion to give the thrust to rocket, Wind & Aerodynamics by keeping the C.G near the nose cone & using fins to stabilise the flight and Mechanical Deployment of Parachute to ensure parachute opens at optimal height. Innovative solutions included parachute deployment mechanism with a lock that opens the parachute at its peak height. This was done by considering the wind drag and spring force on the wing flap. The second innovation included rubber band in the parachute string to absorb the shock when the parachute is deployed. The third innovation included using salt in water to increase its specific impulse, sustainability was considered as we used only recycled material and minimum of material was wasted. We learnt how to work in multicultural group, how to deal with difference of opinions, to focus on subtleties of work project and divide the task into smaller groups from this project that will be useful in our studies.
