Abstract

Leon Krier is an architect, architectural theorist, and urban planner. Krier has been one of the most influential neo-traditional architects and planners and is perhaps best known for his development of Poundbury, an urban extension to Dorchester, UK for the Duchy of Cornwall under the guidance of Prince of Wales. In campaigning for the reconstruction of the traditional European city model, he has had a great influence on the New Urbanism movement, both in the United States and in Europe.

Krier has taught at the Architectural Association, the Royal College of Art, Princeton University, the University of Virginia, and Yale University. At Yale he as held both the Davenport and Eero Saarinen professorships. Between 1987-90 Krier was the first director of the SOMAI, the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Architectural Institute, in Chicago. He has served as a consultant to His Royal Highness, Charles, the Prince of Wales, since 1988, the art director and designer for furniture designer Giorgetti, since 1990, and is a founding trustee of the New School for Traditional Architecture & Urbanism, Charleston, 2002.

Notable awards include the Berlin Prize for Architecture, Jefferson Memorial Gold Medal, Chicago American Institute of Architects Award, European Culture Prize, the silver Medal of the Académie Française awarded to his book Architecture: Choice or Fate, and the Driehaus Prize for Classical and Traditional Architecture. His publications include, among others, Rational - Architecture – Rationnelle; Léon Krier: Drawings; Houses, Palaces, Cities; Albert Speer: Architecture 1932-1942; Architecture and Urban Design 1967-1992; and Architecture: Choice or Fate.
