Faculty OTB Research Institute Date 2009-12-31 Abstract In the debates about sustainable development and planning there is a growing interest in the amount of land use by economic activities. This is particularly so in densely populated countries as China, Singapore and the Netherlands. Despite this interest, there is very little knowledge about land use at the firm level, in terms of its dynamics and causes. In this paper we present the results of a longitudinal panel survey among 1,033 firms about their space use (land and floor space). This panel contains data for the years 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2007. The analysis focuses on two issues: (1) the dynamics of the absolute space use and (2) the dynamics of relative space use (ratio between space use and amount of labour). We show that the dynamics in relative and absolute space use are high and are significantly affected by firm relocations.
