Contributor Qu, L. (mentor) Van Dorst, M.J. (mentor) Chen, Y. (mentor) Faculty Architecture and The Built Environment Department Urbanism Programme Complex Cities Date 2014-06-25 Abstract Nowadays, many Chinese cities like Shenzhen are experiencing intense spatial transformation. Downgrading neighbourhoods are being replaced by high-end housing, shopping malls and office in order to promote economic growth. The former socialist public housing is one of the redevelopment hot spots. However, such land-based development focuses on improving the competiveness of the city without enough concern on affordability of the disadvantaged group. The project aims to balance the goal of economic growth and the provision of affordable housing in Shenzhen. The project will provide suggestion on improving environmental quality and institutional mechanism that facilitates provision of affordable housing in former public housing neighbourhood.
