Kolstein, M.H. Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences Department Structural and Building Date 1995-01-01 Abstract This article describes the behaviour and stress analysis of the crossbeams in orthotropic steel decks with continuous trapezoidal closed stiffeners. The trough stiffener to crossbeam connections, with or without cope holes, influence the behaviour of the crossbeam. The effects can be transferred to effective properties of a beam without cut outs. The deformations of the crossbeam and the stiffeners cause secondary stresses in the stiffeners and the web of the crossbeam. The sensitivity of these stresses with respect to various web depths and shapes of cut out is also investigated. The objective of this study is to improve the knowledge of the fatigue design of these structures.
