A thin cavity, with a thickness « width, is relevant as a model for a continuous steel caster mould. A turbulent jet flow enters the cavity, leading to a quasi-two-dimensional flow. Using large eddy simulations with the dynamic Smagorinsky model with cell face-averaging the filtered velocity field is solved. The model is validated using experimental data before the flow of liquid steel is simulated.
