(mentor) Degree granting institution Delft University of Technology Programme Aerospace Engineering Date 2017-11-15 Abstract In this thesis a vortex generator is presented, that can generate controlled ring-vortex injections into a pipe flow. The performance of the generator and the coherence of its structures is tested by applying a dye visualisation method. Furthermore, iso-contour plots of the 3D velocity field, obtained from Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) data, reveal that the injection develops into a hairpin- or ring-vortex with hairpin packets. In future applications, this vortex generator will be used to study the interaction between the controlled ring-vortex structures and the turbulent structures in the pipe, which will act as a model for scale interactions in turbulence.
