This Project primarily focused on two theme topics, elderly adapted housing and energy refurbishment in order to make an integrated design with the existing Intervam flats in Utrecht. The whole graduation project is consisted of two part, research and design. In the research part, the greenhouse was studied as an integrated approach, its value in different renovating conditions was clarified. Based on the research, the design took two out of six existing Intervam walk-up flats in Camera Obscura and transformed them into an energy neutral elderly apartment by adding a greenhouse atrium. Taking advantage of the atrium, more added value like regulating the indoor climate to meet the elderly people’s demands, embedding mix-used functions into the neighborhood creates a new type of public space to improve the social cohesion and community vitality are all included in the design. The main structure of the new atrium is a multifunctional corridor built by a wooden system designed for the elderly. The elevator-connected corridor is also used to improve the accessibility and social interaction for the elderly people. Overall, This design studied the greenhouse atrium and optimized the result as an integrated tool to solve the diverse problems found in the post-war residential block to make them more future sustainable.
