(mentor) Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences Department Design and Construction Date 2011-11-14 Abstract In the Netherlands, timber is rarely used as primary material in medium rise buildings. The production of these timber buildings is very small compared to the total medium rise production. Because of this, timber as a construction method is an uncommon choice for designers and contractors to make. This results in a slow growing experience with timber. Therefore this research examines the technical feasibility of timber as a load bearing structure in medium rise buildings based on Dutch design requirements. The use of timber in Dutch medium rise buildings is examined by designing a 12 storey high hotel using timber as the primary load bearing structure. The design of the structure is based on cross laminated timber (CLT) panels. The material is extremely strong and stiff making the use of CLT in medium rise buildings very suitable.
