This siege engine uses a swinging arm with a sling attached to throw a projectile. After lifting the heavy counterweight with manpower, all that potential energy can be released within a second. This made it possible to fire a projectile with enormous force. In figure 1 we see a drawing of a counterweight trebuchet.
