Recommendations for implementation of clamping strength in SteenToets: Kennisontwikkeling t.b.v. SteenToets 2006 Onderdeel 1 Normaalkracht

This report belongs to the research programme on unknown aspects of Block Revetment systems. The stability of block revetments under wave loading is presumed to benefit from clamping forces. In previous studies a physical model for clamping forces was developed and verified. The existing design and design checking software code SteenToets evaluates stability numbers for revetments based on physical model that formally neglect any contribution of clamping forces. In this report design formulae are proposed that implement the developed model in a new version of the software code SteenToets. This report consists of a number of notes covering the following subjects: 1. Formulae for evaluation of the normal force 2. Formulae for that transfer known external load parameters into internal loads in the revetment structure 3. Formulae that count for contribution of dynamic load effects and the structures response to that. 4. Formulae that implement natural geometrical irregularities in a real block revetment slope 5. A view on how residual strength could be modelled. This is important to ensure a ductile system characteristic in case of overload of the revetment structure. These set of calculation notes provides a basis for implementation of the model in the software code SteenToets. Actual implementation is performed by WL|Delft Hydraulics.
