The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is situated near the Chesapeake Bay in the eastern US and is part of the College of William and Mary. This placement is part of the 'vervolg docteraal' of the program Physical Geography at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Within this program, the authors specialized in fluvial and coastal systems. The main goal of our placement was to acquire more knowledge about the estuarine environment. A second aim was to gain experience working with people in a foreign country. For this placement, the authors joined the Elizabeth River Project during three months in the summer of 1999. In the first month a two-day fieldwork has been carried out. The samples collected during this fieldwork have been analyzed in the lab using an element analyzer. The results of these analyses are presented in a data report. This placement report will give some information about the Elizabeth River Project, will deal with the data collection and analysis of the carbon and nitrogen analysis and will give an interpretation of the carbon and nitrogen data.
