These methods were both developed to determine the speed of a ship relative to the water, during so-called speed trials. This information is of great importance, since a delivered ship has to satisfy the contract speeds, recorded in the purchase agreement. If the ship does not satisfy these requirements, it could be rejected by the buyer in the worst case. Needless to say, it is very important that the speed trial analysis is as accurate as possible.
