Contributor Glerum, A. (mentor) Bourguignon, G.P. (mentor) Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences Department Hydraulic Engineering Date 1988-01-01 Abstract Protection systems against ship collision are studied in the first report for this thesis. Based on this initial study a number of 10 protection systems for bridge piers at deepwater (>100 m) are developed. As an example a proposed bridge pier for a bridge over the Strait of Gibraltar with a foundation depth of 300 m is chosen. The major problems are to absorb the enormous amount of energy of vessels up to 400.000 dwt which passes the Strait and the foundation depth of 300 m. Based on these conditions a few protection structures against ship collision are proposed. By using a selection matrix one of these is chosen for further study.
