The rapid urbanising capitol of a mainly rural country cannot keep up with providing employment, housing and transportation for its current and future residents. The result is high travel costs in terms of money and time and poor access to income generation for a large share of the urban population. The aim of this thesis to investigate whether a more local approach can contribute to increasing accessibility. By designing current unused open spaces to be productive, for social activity, commercial activity and for producing (such as agriculture) activity, the accessibility to local income generation increases. The thesis discusses the Weyira sefer, a neighbourhood located in the west of Addis Ababa.
