The reason lies in the direct connection of material use with investment costs, which are becoming more important with larger turbines. For this optimization, proper fatigue analysis and assessment of the extreme loads is highly important. For the assessment of extreme loads wind gusts are important. Until now, gusts of a deterministic shape have been used, which is in contrast with the common practise for fatigue analysis. Therefore, Wim Bierbooms developed the NewGust method for simulating wind speed gusts of any desired length and amplitude at DUWIND. The validity of the resulting gust shape has already been proved by several articles, but until now nobody looked into the validity of the load response of a wind turbine resulting from wind gusts simulated according to the NewGust method.
