The Eastern Scheldt barrier is constructed as anopen structure that can separate the Eastern Scheldt estuary from the North Sea. In case that waterlevels of +3.00 m NAP are expected, the steel gates of the barrier close and the hinterland is protectedagainst floods. Besides the protective function of the barrier, the location also shows potential for tidalenergy extraction.
