The project focuses on the so called St. Elisabeth ensemble: a living facility that is directly connected with a historical chapel and remains of a medieval city wall. The aim of this project is to improve the urban and architectural qualities of a multi-functional residential area from the perspective of both its historical significance and current-day social needs. This fits into a broader and contemporary understanding of the term sustainability in which the social aspect is an integral part. Bringing the historical assets more to the forefront answers to a need in the town of Zutphen to put Nieuwstad back on the map. The design is an answer to the challenges that are found in the analysis of the relevant cultural value, architecture and urban environment.
