Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences Department Hydraulic Engineering Date 2014-06-15 Abstract The objective of this research is to obtain generic relations between attenuated wave heights and various vegetation and topographical scenarios. Subsequently, it is aimed to find out what is the actual cost profit of a dike construction behind a mangrove zone comparing to the case when mangroves are absent. The graphs and formulas developed in this research may serve as a first approximation during feasibility studies or conceptual designs of a coastal dike incorporating mangrove vegetation. They allow calculating the design wave height attenuated by site specific or planned for restoration mangrove forests, for different design met-ocean conditions. Calculated wave reduction coefficients can be later on translated to the cost savings of a coastal dike raised behind the mangrove forests.
