Because this diagnostic technique unavoidably exposes the patient to certain health risks, there exists a clear need for a non-intrusive diagnostic tool. Several research programs have been initiated that aim at the development of such a tool. One of these initiatives attempts to determine the nature of the obstruction based on an analysis of the patient’s stridor, a characteristic high-pitched breathing sound that often accompanies UAOs.
