Abstract

Seminar "Publish for Impact"

Event date: 27 October 2016
Location: Science Centre Delft
Host: TU Delft Research Support, Erasmus University en Universiteit Leiden (LDE)

This talk will consider the rapidly changing open access (OA) landscape and its impact on academic research, with a particular focus on humanities scholarship. Dr Caroline Edwards is a Founder and Director of the Open Library of Humanities (OLH), which launched in September 2015 as a publishing platform for “gold” OA journals, with no author-facing charges. The OLH has been a pioneer in building an academic grassroots movement that champions non-profit OA publishing led by scholars. With partners such as the Dutch linguistics network, Ling-OA, the OLH is demonstrating how subscription journals can be “flipped” to open access in a sustainable way. Dr Edwards will outline how the OLH has grown and what it can offer scholars in terms of bring together the best of traditional publishing and editorial practices with cutting-edge technological innovations in digital publishing and infrastructure.

Dr. Caroline Edwards is Lecturer in Modern & Contemporary Literature at Birkbeck, University of London. She is currently completing a monograph entitled Fictions of the Not Yet: Time and the Contemporary British Novel, and has published two co-edited collections on British authors, Maggie Gee: Critical Essays (Gylphi, 2015) and China Miéville: Critical Essays (Gylphi, 2015). Caroline is also a keen advocate of open access publishing, having co-founded the Open Library of Humanities (OLH) in 2013. She currently works as Editorial Director for the OLH and also runs Alluvium, an open-access journal of 21st-century literary criticism.
