Huiswerk Architecten

This lecture is part of the "Flashback/Flash-Forward: Scenes from the Practice of Architecture" lecture series. The Berlage Institute has invited five contemporary architecture practices, who will discuss their recent work as well as reflect on the architectural projects, theories, and writings of the past decade that have influenced their work. The aim is both to explore the last decade of architectural production and to give a glimpse of the trends that will lead architecture culture and practice in the decade to come.

Erik Wieërs studied architecture in Antwerp (NHIBS, 1987) and has a master of philosophy in Brussels (VUB, 1991). He is currently a lecturer at the Faculty of Design Sciences of the UA, where he teaches architectural design. He was a founding partner of Meta architects and architects Huiswerk. He is a member of the Welstandcommissie of the city of Antwerp. In 2011 he founded Collective North, together with Pieter Eeckeloo, Christopher Paesbrugghe, Hans Van Bavel and Peter Wils.

Dirk Somers studied from 1995-1999 architecture in Antwerp and Milan, and in 2002 he graduated in Urban and Environmental Planning at KU Leuven. In 2001 he set up Huiswerk Architecten together with Erik Wieërs. He lectures on topics such as tectonics, materialization and urban architecture. He is teaching Architectural Design at Delft University of Technology. He is also visiting professor at the faculty of Engineering and Architecture in Gent. In October 2011, Huiswerk Architecten has ceased to exist and Dirk Somers has set up a new office: Bovenbouw Architectuur.
